The Spokane Storytelling League is part of a long, rich tradition. A Tennessee literature professor founded the first storytelling league in 1903. Storytelling leagues reached their height during the 1940s, with more than 5,000 members were registered with the National Storytellers League. That number has dwindled to around 400 in recent years. Spokane alone was once home to five separate neighborhood storytelling groups, which eventually merged to form a single group comprised of around 15 people.
