History
Over 900 years ago, Scottish King Malcolm Canmore devised the first Scottish Games. In that tradition, the Inland Northwest has celebrated its heritage through a festival, tattoo or Highland Games since 1959. That was the year of the first Scottish Festival held in Coeur d'Alene, ID, to coincide with the annual Scottish Picnic held in the area every summer since 1935.
For the first few years, the festival or tattoo was merely a Saturday night pipe band contest that attracted pipe bands from Washington, Idaho, Alberta and British Columbia. In 1967, the Coeur d’Alene Summer School of Piping and Drumming became an integral part of the tattoo.
In later years, the tattoo became the Scottish Festival and moved to Spokane, where it has been held every summer since in varying formats – in some years as a full-blown Highland Games and in others as a more modest piping competition.
The 1994 Highland Games marked a renewal in the spirit and enthusiasm of the games with a variety of exhibits, demonstrations, traditional foods and, of course, piping, drumming and dancing.
Coming to the Spokane Highland Games is a great way for the whole family to partake in the fun and excitement of this unique and colorful Scottish event, without having to travel to Scotland.
Mission
The Spokane Highland Games Association's is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. Its mission is to promote Scottish heritage and cultural preservation in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho through athletic, music, dance and culinary competitions, and through heritage displays and demonstrations. We are a non-profit, non-sectarian organization open to all, without bias to race, color or gender, to anyone of Scottish descent, or any other person who has a strong interest in Scottish heritage or culture.
The Spokane Highland Games Association supports itself through a yearly funds raising event, the Spokane Scottish Highland Games, and through individual and corporate sponsorship contributions.
What we do
Each year the Spokane Highland Games Association holds a very special event, the Spokane Highland Games. We stage the Games at the Spokane County Fair & Expo Center on the first Saturday in August. (Except when we have a national pandemic.)
This is a day for family and friends to experience a charming Scottish day-adventure full of entertainment, feats of triumph and fun activities. You will enjoy the traditional features of Scottish Highland Games, such as massed bands, pipe band exhibitions, individual piping, heavy athletics and highland dancing. There are also children’s games where they can take their turn at the Caber Toss (pint-sized, of course)!
You can view performances of Scottish highland and country dancing, and delight in the beautifully entertaining Celtic bands throughout the day.
Take old-fashioned pleasure in viewing the “hielan’ coos” (highland cattle) exhibition and blacksmith demonstrations all day.
Participate in “the Scots vs. the Irish” tug of war competition following the Opening Ceremonies. If you're not either Scottish or Irish, you are welcome to join in and pick your side.
Visit the clan tents to discover whether you have Scottish ancestry, and shop at the Scottish and Celtic merchant booths.
Visit the British Car exhibit and see great examples of 1950s, 1960s and 1970s Austin-Healeys, Jaguars, Austin Minis, MGTDs and MGBs. This is a special treat for auto lovers.
As in the past, we continue to keep the admission prices reasonable in keeping with our commitment to making the Spokane Scottish Highland Games a family event. And importantly, parking is Free!
We would love if you would join us next August, or whenever the circumstances permit us to stage the Games. Bring the family. We're sure you will enjoy your day and you'll create lasting memories.
