Spokane Folklore Society's Contra Dances |
The mission of the Spokane Folklore Society is to promote a broad community awareness of cultural and folk traditions, such as music, dance, and other folk arts through social and educational events such as concerts, dances, workshops, and festivals.
The Society was established in 1977 and is a non-profit organization run by volunteers. Membership dues, event admissions, and donations support the Society and its mission.
One of the main events sponsored by the SFS is contra dancing with live music. Contra dance is a type of traditional dance from New England. Dancers face each other in “contra” lines and move up and down the set as couples directed by a caller. Music that is played during contra dance is most often built around the central instrument of the fiddle (other popular instruments are a mandolin, guitar, and banjo). The Virginia Reel is one of many dances in this style. You don’t have to have any experience – the callers teach all the moves. Beginners, singles, and couples are welcome.
This video is a compilation of Spokane contra dances during the past few years. It shows our weekly Wednesday night dances at the Woman’s Club Hall, Saturday monthly dances at the East Spokane Grange and our yearly contra dances at the Fall Folk Festival.
